Dream big and dare to fail

Proclamation Day at Coláiste Bríde in Clondalkin (where I was a pupil) was a really special moment for all present.

It was a particularly poignant moment for Patricia Harrington, who was given the honour of raising the flag along with students Katrina Duma, Roberta Vysniauskaite and Song Zi Wei.

Patricia is the eldest member of staff, having recently celebrated her 79th birthday, and she has served the school for 37 years.

Mrs. Harrington, as we call her, taught me organic gardening (Michelle Obama's forerunner!) and choir classes a long time ago, and she is still going strong. She insisted we get hard-backed notebooks for choir, a good lesson in itself to buy beautiful stationary that will last. On our first day with our fresh A4 notebooks, Mrs. Harrington instructed us to write a quote in the inside cover where we would see it often: "Dream big and dare to fail" - Norman Vaughan. Thanks Miss. Legend.

School Principal Marie-Therese Kilmartin addressed the gathering, giving a special shout-out to her rebels! A gang of rebels burst into classrooms earlier in the day and claimed them for the Irish Republic. The Transition Year girl gang brought history to life. Go girls!
